Pedal Steel Player's Notebook

Today is the birthday of one of the most influential and at the same time mysterious musicians of modern times. Born in 1911 on this day, Robert Johnson has left a legacy of music that to this day, musicians around the world consider one of the greatest catalog of blues songs ever recorded.
Robert recorded 29 songs in his short career and they have been covered by numerous musicians and bandsfrom blues, country and rock. Very little is known about Robert the man but we do have some first hand accounts from David 'Honeyboy' Edwards and Robert 'Jr' Lockwood. Both of these men actually spent some time traveling with Robert as he worked as a traveling bluesman in the 1920s and 30s.
It has been said that Robert was a musical genius and able to play a song only having heard it one time. You can in fact hear several of his influences in his playing such as Charlie Patton, Blind Blake, Lonnie Johnson and others.
Robert was a master playing the guitar. He used several different tunings including open G and A. He used a slide to get an erie vocal like sound such as on 'Come On In My Kitchen' and he also was a master finger picker as can be heard on other songs such as on 'Steady Rollin Man'. All in all, when listening to Robert it sounds like there are 2 guitar players!
Well, Happy Birthday Mr Johnson and thank you for your music. The world would certainly not be the same without it!
By the way, be sure to keep checking your email because later this week I will be announcing 2 new book and CD courses of Delta style blues guitar! Stay posted.
